THOUGHTS & QUOTES

“A shortcut may be the longest distance between two points”

Think about it! If one takes a shortcut but encounters the consequent risk and never gets to ‘point B’ or ends up in the hospital from the injury, it really didn’t save any time at all!

Developing Table-top Simulations -- Article in Journal of Extension (JOE)

Activities in which participants work through real-world scenarios can enhance their ability to manage complex situations and can encourage implementation of risk management strategies. Practical and credible information presented in a "hands-on" setting is engaging and memorable. This article shows how to develop and use table-top simulations. The article, by Carol Lehtola, is at http://www.joe.org/joe/2007august/tt4.shtml.

A similar article that focused on using narrative stories as a teaching tool was in JOE in June 2007

Helping Farmers, Ranchers, Youth and Educators Comply with the Youth Labor Law

Youth ages 14 and 15 can be employed in agriculture for work not classified as hazardous, as long as the work does not interfere with school and appropriate wages are paid. A new brochure, published by Purdue University Extension, explains the tasks that can be performed and those that cannot or that may require special training. The brochure is very helpful in explaining Hazardous Work requirements for youth. The brochure itself can be downloaded from https://www.ydae.purdue.edu/tractor/HOSTA_poster.pdf. The main site for this topic is www.agsafety4youth.info.

Annual Reminder for Hayrides, Haunted Houses and Agritourism

In past fall editions of SN&N, we have included reminders for safety during fall activities such as hayrides, haunted houses and other agritourism types of activities. An agritourism publication was developed by the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety. It can be downloaded from http://www.marshfieldclinic.org/nfmc/pages/default.aspx?page=nccrahs_ag_tourism.

Hayride and Haunted house activity safety is provided by the International Association of Haunted Attractions.

Neighborhood Safety Network (NSN) Posters & Kid’s Page

Several posters are available for downloading from the Consumer Product Safety Commission Web site. Many of them are available in both English and Spanish. By going to the CPSC home page you can sign up for reminders when the NSN publishes new items.

CPSC also has a fun interactive Web page for the kids. They can play various games, download comic books, etc. (e.g., bike safety is taught by Sprocket Man!).
