general industrial stairs, including interior and exterior stairs
around machinery, tanks and other equipment, and stairs leading
to or from floors, platforms or pits.)
General Housekeeping Requirements:

NIOSH Warns Farmers of Deadly Risk
of Grain Suffocation

deadly hazards when working with grain bins. At least nine farmers
recently suffocated to death in stored grain after being buried
alive.)
NIOSH Warns: Manure Pits Continue to
Claim Lives
(According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health (NIOSH), farm workers are risking their lives every
time they enter a manure pit.)
Preventing Deaths of Farm Workers in
Manure Pits
(Many farm workers appear to be unaware of the immediate danger
posed by entry into manure pits. Like other types of confined
spaces, manure pits present special problems regarding worker
awareness of hazards. The dangerous atmospheric conditions may
exist intermittently.)
Preventing Entrapment and Suffocation
Caused by the Unstable Surfaces of Stored Grain and Other Materials
(Managers, supervisors, and workers are requested to help prevent
the accidental entrapment and subsequent suffocation of workers
trapped by the unstable surfaces of stored grain and other materials.)
Preventing Fatalities Due to Fires
